Notes on this work
The Concerto Grosso is central to Baroque music in which the whole orchestra is virtuosic like an organ. Handel is the master but this drawing came out of a more recent example. A Schnittke festival at the Barbican Centre in London featured his own perspective on the classical form and it was the memory of his surprise bending and reshaping of it that served as the impetus for this drawing. In a sense it transcribes the music that I was seeing in my mind as well as hearing with my ears.
