Notes on this work
This etching was made while Tom Phillips was teaching at Wolverhampton College of Art and he worked on the plate during his train journeys between London and Wolverhampton. It was carried to and fro many times in his pocket or bag and this explains the small nicks and scratches visible on the plate which became part of the print. The figure is taken from a postcard of Dudley Street.
This work relates to the painting Art Gallery and Gardens Wolverhampton (currently in the collection of Wolverhampton City Art Gallery) painted during the same period, one version in London and one in Wolverhampton and also the painting Dudley Street as all three works share the same postcard source material.
