Starless and Bible Black
Island Records, 1974
King Crimson
Notes on this work
The sixth studio album by Robert Fripp's group, with a title borrowed from Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas. Phillips's involvement came via a recommendation by from Fripp collaborator (and former TP student) Brian Eno. The text-only cover design wasn't without precedent for rock albums of this period but the pattern of overlaid stencil lettering inside the gatefold runs contrary to the airbrushed fantasy art that was a staple of the era. On the back cover an intriguing phrase from A Humument appears in a framed detail: "this night wounds time".
