Notes on this work
The 9' by 12' mural that I made for the architect Trevor Dannatt's new extension to Colfe's School in South East London involves the interplay of calligraphy and stencilled lettering which form a palimpsest of texts (motto, signature of founder etc.) relating to the school's history.
In the belief that children of primary school age do not actually prefer big shapes and bold colours, as is generally and patronisingly assumed, I designed a work of complicated harmony and puzzling intricacy, through which there are many paths of line and colour that can be explored. Since boys 'waiting to see the Head' have to linger in this area I thought they might be temporarily diverted by this written maze.
