The Wheel of Fortune shown here was enlarged from a tiny original drawing made in 1977, and incorporates a South African banknote which the artist had overprinted with a slogan 'Slegs vir Almal' (Reserved for Everyone), a riposte to the Apartheid era's widespread notices 'Slegs vir Blankes' (Reserved for Whites). The darkening of the face on the banknote symbolises the hope that the fortunes of the black population will be righted by a turn of the Wheel.
