The half-title page heralds the use throughout the book of the appearance of treated fragments taken from W.H. Mallock's A Human Document, the Victorian novel which was to form the basis of Tom Phillips's magnum opus A Humument.

The image presents a world as book cut from marbled end-paper with a missing segment to indicate the hollowed cone of Hell.
