Three arrows stand for the threefold journey Dante undertakes: into exile, suggested by the arrow pointing forwards to the cancelled Florentine lilies, the upward-pointing one promising future travel to be reunited with his beloved Beatrice, the third direction being his journey downwards to Hell.
