At the bottom of Hell Dante still finds his fellow-citizens in plenty – feuding brothers representing the divisions of Guelph and Ghibelline, murderers of kinsmen and other traitors and turncoats – all of whom occasion Dante’s final outburst against his city: so here the lily of Florence suffers its final visual degradation via a re-severed version of the originally severed and computer-distorted emblem.
